Tips to Starting Your Fitness Journey

Starting a new fitness journey can seem intimidating. When there are millions of diets, influencers, and workouts out there that claim to get you in the best shape of your life, where do you start? Well, it doesn’t have to be complicated. The best plan is a simple, yet smart and efficient plan. Here are some easy tips for getting started. 

1.     Set Measurable and Realistic Goals

Setting a goal is a great start but let's make sure we make an action plan to get you to the finish line. Be specific instead of …
I want to lose weight —>  I am going to work out 3x a week and count calories. 
I want to drink more water —> I am going to drink 2.7L of water a day 
I want to increase my steps —> I am going to take the stairs at work and I am going to walk a mile on my lunch break. 
I want to eat healthier —> I will switch my nightly ice cream to yogurt and fruit.
Take the time to write these goals down and put them where you can see them. Keep it simple, realistic, and measurable. 

2.     Keep Nutritious Food On Hand

Keeping healthy food on hand. Keeps us from reaching back into our old habits. I always remind my clients it is important to keep our kitchens stocked with healthy (already prepared) options to keep our hunger from taking over. Remember trying to lose weight should not be about deprivation, it should be about fueling our bodies to feel healthy and give us good energy and sleep. 3.     Follow a Program

Following a program will keep you on track even when you can’t see the results. Changing your fitness habits takes time. Following a program or set plan allows you to stop worrying about the end result and focus on just showing up every day and doing the work. Many people get discouraged after a few weeks into a new diet or exercise plan and start changing things or giving up altogether. Having a program can take away the stress of wondering if you are doing the right thing and taking detours along the way. Hiring a personal trainer, or nutritionist, or joining a fitness group is a great place to start a program for your goals. Which brings us to…

4.     You Don’t Need Motivation Just a Commitment To Yourself.

Follow your plan. Whatever you wrote down, Whatever plan you choose, just follow it. Show up every day even when you don’t want to. Just give yourself a chance to do the work. Remember our goals are still the same even if you don’t feel motivated today. Use your motivated days to prep food, make plans, and set goals. On the other days, just remember you made a promise to yourself. Only you can show up for yourself and get you across the finish line.
